Fatal Crash Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, November 13, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the North Tryon Division.
On Sunday, November 12, 2023, at approximately 2:33 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the 5500 block of Reagan Drive. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male lying on the side of the road. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene. The victim, Maurice Irving Overton (DOB: 08/03/1967), was pronounced deceased by MEDIC at the scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian, Mr. Overton, was walking westbound on the right side of the roadway along Reagan Drive when he was struck by a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by, Darren Allen Jefferies (DOB: 07/16/1991). The pedestrian was not walking in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing. Mr. Jefferies was uninjured and was wearing a seatbelt.
Impairment is believed to be a factor in this collision. Toxicology results are pending for both Mr. Jefferies and Mr. Overton.
Mr. Jefferies has been charged with the following in connection to this crash:
- Felony Death by Vehicle
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
- Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Collision
Mr. Overton’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
