Fatal Crash Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, December 10, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle in the in the Hickory Grove Division.

On Sunday, December 8, 2024, at 3:08 a.m., Hickory Grove Division officers responded to a vehicle crash with injuries in the 5100 block of North Sharon Amity Road. Upon arrival, officers located a black 2015 Chevrolet Camaro and its operator Yeferson Orozco Velasquez, 21, who had collided with a nearby tree. MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced Velasquez deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Velasquez was driving northbound on North Sharon Amity Road at a high rate of speed when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in the center median.

Velasquez was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Speed was a factor in the crash. It is unknown if impairment was also a factor in the crash.

Mr. Velasquez’s next of kin have been notified of his death.
