Case Update: Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, January 8, 2024) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have identified the driver and vehicle in connection to this case. The pedestrian, Mr. Sheridan Eugene Channing Brown (DOB 05/27/1987), was struck by a red 2008 Ford F-150 as he was crossing N. Sharon Amity Rd. The driver fled the scene.
On Friday, December 29, 2023, the driver of the red Ford F-150, Melvin Alexis Barahona Zapata (DOB: 7/20/1994), was located by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department (MS). An arrest warrant was obtained for Felony Hit and Run. Deputies with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department arrested Mr. Barahona Zapata on the outstanding warrant.
Detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit traveled to Mississippi to interview Mr. Barahona Zapata and to retrieve evidence related to this case that was in the custody of the DeSoto Sheriff’s Department.
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, December 27, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Eastway Division.
On Monday, December 25th, 2023, at approximately 7:52 p.m., officers from the Eastway Division responded to the 3100 block of N. Sharon Amity Road in reference to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Upon officers’ arrival, they located a male subject later identified as Mr. Sheridan Eugene Channing Brown (DOB 05/27/1987) on the sidewalk with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene before officers arrived on scene. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene to assist. MEDIC transported Mr. Brown to Novant Health Main with life-threatening injuries. Shortly before 10 p.m., Mr. Brown was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating this vehicle collision. The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Brown was laying down in the roadway when a silver 4 door sedan ran him over and fled the scene. Mr. Brown was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash. Mr. Brown was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.
Impairment is unknown for Mr. Brown and is pending the toxicology report. Speed does not appear to be a factor in this vehicle collision. Impairment is unknown for the driver.
