Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, December 19, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Eastway Division.
On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at approximately 5:43 a.m., Eastway Division officers responded to a single vehicle crash with injuries in the 3800 block of East Independence Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located a 2005 Chevrolet Express Van off the roadway. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene. Medic pronounced the front right seat passenger, Wilmer Noe Aguilera Lopez (DOB 06/13/2001, deceased on scene. The driver of the van was transported to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the van, Josue Ruben Aguilera Lopez (DOB 11/06/2004), was traveling west on East Independence Boulevard in the right turn only lane when the van struck the curb, lost control, went off the right side of the roadway and struck an overhead sign support beam.
Speed nor impairment are believed to be factors in this collision.
Mr. Wilmer Lopez’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
