Case Update: Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, December 15, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have charged a 17-year-old driver in this case.
Detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have determined the driver of the Mazda 3 was traveling above the posted speed limit when they lost control of the vehicle, veered off of the left side of the roadway, went airborne and flipped.
On Friday, December 15, 2023, the 17-year-old driver was taken into custody by officers in the CMPD’s Eastway Division. The driver was then transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with the following:
- Speeding
- No Operators License
- Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, December 8, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Eastway Division.
On Thursday, December 7, 2023, at approximately 9:25 a.m., Eastway Division officers responded to a single vehicle crash with injuries in the 3200 block of Shamrock Drive. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a 2010 Mazda 3 with extensive damage on its side off the side off of the roadway. Four juveniles were located outside of the vehicle with injuries. MEDIC transported three juveniles with serious injuries and one juvenile with life-threatening injuries to Atrium Health Main.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Mazda was traveling westbound on Shamrock Drive when the vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway, went airborne and flipped. During this event, three unrestrained passengers were ejected from the vehicle. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and remained in the vehicle until it came to rest.
All occupants of the Mazda are students at Garinger High School. The juveniles’ parents and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are aware of this incident.
On Sunday, December 10, 2023, at approximately 4:45 p.m., Allisson Manrique Mejia (DOB: 07/15/2008), was pronounced deceased at Atrium Health Main due to the injuries she sustained in the crash.
