Fatal Crash Investigation in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, October 10, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle in the Eastway Division.

On Monday, September 16, 2024, shortly before 5:15 p.m., Eastway Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury near the 2600 block of Central Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a 2012 Toyota Camry that had struck a utility pole.  The driver, Lawrence Jay Segal, 70, was located inside of the vehicle. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.  Mr. Segal was transported by MEDIC to Atrium Health Main.

On Wednesday, September 18, Mr. Segal succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Detectives from the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit were notified of the collision on Wednesday, September 18, and began their investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Segal was driving a gray 2012 Toyota Camry on Central Avenue near Morningside Drive when he suffered a medical emergency resulting in the crash and his injuries.

Mr. Segal’s next of kin was present at the time of his passing.
