Fatal Crash Investigation in the Central Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, May 7th, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on a motorized scooter in the Central Division.

On Saturday, May 6th, 2023, at approximately 6:25 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Mint Street in reference to a motor vehicle versus pedestrian serious injury crash. Officers were working in this location when the incident occurred. Upon arrival, officers located the operator of the BIRD Inc scooter, a juvenile, who was struck by a 2022 Dodge Ram 3500 while crossing the street. The juvenile victim was transported to Atrium Main with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to the injuries prior to arrival at the hospital. The juvenile was identified as Carlos David Caro Sevilla (DOB: 01/26/2007)

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Dodge, who was also a juvenile, was attempting to make a right turn on to Mint Street from W Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. At the same time, the victim operating the scooter entered the crosswalk where the Dodge was turning and was struck by the Dodge.

The juvenile driver of the Dodge remained on scene and was screened for impairment and found to not be impaired.

At this time, there are no charges pending for the driver of the Dodge, but the case is active and ongoing.

Mr. Caro Sevilla’s family has been notified of his death.
