Fatal Biking Accident Investigation in the Steele Creek Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, June 13, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal biking accident in the Steele Creek Division.
On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, shortly before 6:30 p.m., officers from the Steele Creek Division responded to the 9200 block of Steele Creek Road in reference to a vehicle collision involving a bicyclist. When officers arrived, they located the victim lying in the roadway unresponsive. The driver, Jeffrey Jordan, 38, remained on scene to speak with officers. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic responded to the scene. Mihael Stegne, 58, was pronounced deceased on scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation.
The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Stegne was riding his bicycle across Steele Creek Road outside of the designated cross walk when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the southbound lanes with the flow of traffic. He was not wearing a helmet.
Excessive speed does not appear to be a contributing factor to this incident. Mr. Stegne’s toxicology report is pending.
Mr. Stegne’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
