Dog Attack Investigation in the University City Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, August 22, 2024) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Animal Care and Control is investigating an incident in which a child was seriously injured by a dog in the University City Division.

On Monday, August 19, 2024, at approximately 8:51 p.m., Animal Care and Control officers received a call for service regarding a dog attack involving a 3-year-old child in the 5400 block of Cameron Commons Parkway. CMPD’s University City Division officers and MEDIC were already on scene. 

The preliminary investigation indicates that a group of children were in the front yard playing when three dogs owned by the victim’s family were let out of the garage. Two of the dogs playfully knocked the victim to the ground when the third dog approached and began to bite the victim and dragged them down the driveway.  Several adult witnesses ran toward the child and attempted to stop the attack. Two individuals fired gunshots near the dog. As a result, the canine retreated into the garage.

MEDIC transported the victim to Atrium Health Main with serious injuries.

The dog was surrendered to Animal Care and Control by its owner.  The canine will be held for a 10-day rabies quarantine.  The dog will be euthanized after the quarantine period has ended.  

To ensure the safety of young children around dogs, parents and guardians are encouraged to closely supervise their children.
