Death Investigation in the Freedom Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, June 27, 2024) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a death investigation in the 4100 block of Wilkinson Boulevard in the Freedom Division.

 

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, shortly before 6:30 p.m., Freedom Division officers responded to an Assist MEDIC call in the 4100 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located an 8-year-old female in critical condition inside of a vehicle. The victim was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased.

 

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD and MEDIC also assisted.

 

Upon further investigation it was determined that the victim was left in a vehicle in hot weather conditions and suffered a medical emergency. At the conclusion of the investigation, the victim’s mother Ashlee Stallings, 36, has been arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Child Abuse by Willful Act Causing Serious Injury. Stallings has been transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

 

The victim’s next of kin has been notified of the arrest.

 

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
