Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, March. 8, 2024) – Today, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) celebrated International Women’s Day with the launch of a women’s recruitment campaign, “CMPD: Where Women Shine.”

Chief Johnny Jennings spoke at a press conference this morning alongside Deputy Chief Jacquelyn Hulsey, Research and Strategic Planning Manager Morgan Parks, Public Affairs Director Sandra Vastola and Officer Jatasha Bias.

The “CMPD: Where Women Shine” campaign highlights the success of both sworn and civilian female employees and promotes limitless opportunities for career growth as well as benefits that allow for a healthy work-life balance.

“We are steadfast in our commitment to promoting gender diversity within the CMPD,” said Chief Johnny Jennings. “We actively support and encourage female employees to pursue leadership roles by providing comprehensive resources and assistance to aid in their success.”

The campaign will run for at least four months and includes digital banner ads and social media advertising as well as graphics, blog posts and videos produced by CMPD’s Public Affairs Division that will appear across all CMPD social media channels. More information on the campaign and a full list of benefits is located on the webpage: https://charlottepolicejobs.org/careers/women-of-cmpd/.

Currently eight of ten members of Chief Jennings’ executive staff are females including three Deputy Chiefs. The CMPD is also part of the 30x30 initiative, a national goal for law enforcement agencies to increase the number of women in their ranks to 30% by the year 2030. The department has taken steps to increase female representation by removing many barriers that have traditionally kept women out of policing. This includes:

  • Protected Parental Leave
  • Seven private lactation rooms with an eighth location being added to the Training Academy
  • Education Reimbursement Program
  • Family integration in Police Academy training
  • Clinical Care Access Pilot Program providing reimbursement for qualified therapy services
  • Access to free or low-cost healthcare and mental health services

“We are very proud of how far we’ve come but we also acknowledge we still have a long way to go to achieve the gender diversity we want to see,” said Chief Johnny Jennings.

Currently, 14% of all CMPD sworn staff are female and 70% of civilian employees are female, totaling 27% of the department. Women account for 14% of all sworn leadership roles in the CMPD.
