Case Update: Arrest in Sexual Assault Investigations Across Multiple CMPD Divisions

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, September 11, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, detectives with the CMPD’s Sexual Assault Unit have arrested and charged a suspect wanted in connection to multiple cases, including two sexual assaults and three attempted kidnappings, that occurred across multiple CMPD divisions and Huntersville. After discussion with the Huntersville Police Department, CMPD detectives will take the lead on investigating the Huntersville case.

In the evening hours of Saturday, September 9, 2023, Steele Creek Division officers located the suspect vehicle shortly after 7:30 p.m. The suspect, Kelvin Rene Mejia Ortiz (DOB: 10/10/1991) was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown (601 E. Trade St) for questioning. At the conclusion of the interview, Mr. Ortiz was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with multiple counts of Rape, Sexual Battery, Attempted Kidnapping, Assault on a Female and Communicating Threats. All victims of Mr. Ortiz that CMPD have identified at this point are Hispanic females. Mr. Ortiz spoke both English and Spanish to his victims.

This investigation is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Office. Detectives Harrington and Melendez are the lead detectives assigned to this case. Sexual Assault Investigations Across Multiple CMPD Divisions

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, September 9, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit are looking for a suspect in multiple assault cases, including two sexual assaults, that occurred across multiple CMPD divisions.

In these cases, the suspect followed the victims in his vehicle before using a weapon to intimidate them into leaving with him.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 20's or 30’s, between 5'5" and 5’8”, with a medium build. He was wearing a dark-colored hoodie and dark pants at the time and all incidents began in the area of Archdale Road, Nations Ford Road or East Arrowood Road.

The suspect vehicle appears to be a 2010, or similar year model, gray/silver Jeep as is pictured below.
