Arrest Made in Break-Ins Potentially Linked to South American Crime Groups
Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, August 25, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s South Division have identified a suspect who was arrested for his involvement in a series of residential break-ins potentially coordinated by a South American crime group. Due to the ongoing investigation and involvement from federal partner agencies, CMPD cannot identify the suspect at this time.
The residential break-ins occurred between late 2022 and early 2023. CMPD detectives, with assistance from law enforcement agencies on both the local and federal levels, identified the suspect in an incident on Parview Drive in the South Division. Charges against the suspect were filed in both Mecklenburg and Union counties. Local authorities collaborated with Virginia officials in the apprehension of the suspect. He remains in custody in Virginia on numerous charges.
The detectives involved in this investigation have learned that the operations of the suspected South American crime groups reach well beyond Charlotte. CMPD detectives have developed a far-reaching network of law-enforcement agencies to share information both regionally and internationally to help prevent further criminal activity.
Due to the heightened awareness from community members of residential break-ins in the South Charlotte area, CMPD has seen an increase in reporting of similar incidents, unrelated to the South American crime groups. The reporting of these incidents and proactive measures by residents to report suspicious behavior and update their alarm systems has led to two recent residential break-in arrests. The arrests of Deni’Jay Moore (DOB 07/21/2001) and Matthew Morency (DOB 10/19/1987) are detailed in the following incident reports:
- Moore: 20230807-0409-00
- Morency: 20230730-1418-00
Again, these two arrests do not appear to be related to any organized groups but do show the attentiveness of the community and the officers in the area.
