Solid Waste Services is committed to providing great service to Charlotte's 897,000+ residents and helping the city remain clean and beautiful. Garbage Collection

Garbage is collected once a week on your scheduled collection day. To find your collection day and recycling week, visit My Charlotte Lookup.

Garbage Collection Guidelines

  • Bag all garbage before placing it in the gray garbage rollout cart. Do not overfill carts or place garbage items outside of the cart. Items outside the rollout cart will not be collected.
  • Please place garbage cart within 6 feet of the curb and with the handle facing toward your property. Do not block the sidewalk.
  • Please allow 3 feet of space between collection items and other obstacles such as mailboxes, phone poles and vehicles.
  • Place garbage cart at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on your scheduled collection day and no sooner than the day before collection. The cart must be removed from the curb by midnight on the day of collection.

Recycling Collection

Recyclables are collected every other week on the same day as garbage and yard waste collection. To find your collection day and recycling week, visit My Charlotte Lookup. To review what items are accepted for curbside recycling and what items aren't, visit the Recycle Right page.

  • Plastic bottles and jugs with necks.
  • Paper and magazines.
  • Milk and juice cartons.
  • Glass bottles and jars (lids can be on).
  • Empty metal cans.

Unacceptable Items for Curbside Recycling

  • Cardboard that has not been cut or torn into small pieces.
  • Food.
  • Shredded paper.
  • Paper plates.
  • Plastic bags, food trays, cups and plasticware.
  • Takeout food containers.
  • Styrofoam.
  • Napkins.
  • Diapers.
  • Hoses.
  • Scrap metal and auto parts.
  • Cords.

Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste is collected from the curb once a week on your scheduled collection day provided the materials meet preparation requirements. Yard waste is made into mulch and compost for reuse.

Yard Waste Collection Guidelines

  • Place yard waste at the curb by 6 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
  • Place yard waste within 6 feet of the curb and at least 3 feet away from other collection items (including other yard waste) and obstacles such as mailboxes, phone poles and vehicles. Do not block the sidewalk.
  • Place yard waste at the curb no sooner than the day before collection. A minimum $150 citation may be issued if you place yard waste at the curb sooner than the day before collection.
  • Please do not blow yard waste into the street.
  • Brush:
    • Brush should be no longer than 5 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter.
    • Separate brush into piles that are no longer than 5 feet long and 3 feet high. There should be 2 feet in between each pile.
  • Limbs:
    • Limbs must be no longer than 5 feet in length and no larger than 4 inches in diameter.
    • Limbs should be separated in piles that are no longer than 5 feet long and 3 feet high. There should be 2 feet in between each pile.
    • Limbs should not be tied.
    • Limbs may be placed in containers for collection.
  • Logs:
    • Logs must be under 4 inches in diameter.
    • Tree stumps will not be collected.

Bulky Waste Collection

Items such as household furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment and similar items too large to be placed in the garbage rollout cart and not eligible for recycling or yard waste collection are considered bulky waste and must be scheduled for collection. Bulky Waste Collection Guidelines

  • Schedule bulky items for collection by calling 311 (704.336.7600), using the CLT+ app, or requesting online.
  • To be eligible for this service, you must currently receive garbage collection from the City of Charlotte.
  • If you need to cancel or make changes to an existing pickup request, please call 311 (704.336.7600) by noon on the business day prior to your scheduled pickup.
  • Items placed at the curb without scheduling will not be collected.
