16th Street streetscape

Part of the Capital Investment Plan

Applied Innovation Corridor's North End

Project phase

Proposed typical section of the streetscape with bike lanes, sidewalks, planting strips and lighting, presented at the Jan. 9, 2020 community meeting at the Belmont Center.

 Project updates

This project will include a two-lane roadway, bicycle lanes, planting strips, sidewalks and street lights on 16th Street between North Tryon Street and Parkwood Avenue. The City is also working in coordination with the private developer for Optimist Hall to implement portions of the project, including the realignment of 16th Street from Parkwood Avenue to LYNX Blue Line.

Benefits identified from these potential improvements:

This project is being coordinated with the Charlotte Water's Belmont and Optimist Park wastewater pipe replacement project and Storm Water Services' Parkwood Phase 2 storm drainage improvements project. Combining these projects will be more convenient for residents, decreasing the length of time needed to close 16th Street during construction as well as be more cost efficient.

  • To provide safer and improved transportation options for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists on 16th Street between North Tryon Street and Parkwood Avenue

  • To provide aesthetic improvements for a more pleasant streetscape

The project team held two public meetings in May 2017 and July 2018 to get feedback from residents on potential improvements in this area.

$3.9 million

Funding is currently allocated within North Carolina Department of Transportation's State Transportation Improvement Program for changes to pavement markings to incorporate bike lanes.

Please note this is the funding amount and includes all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, acquiring the right of way, utility relocation, consultant fees, construction, signalization, permits and landscaping.
