North Tryon Street business corridor

Project phase

New traffic pattern on North Tryon Street and Church Street

NEW "ONE-WAY PAIR" TRAFFIC PATTERN: MOTORISTS AND PEDESTRIANS ADVISED TO USE EXTRA CAUTION

A new, permanent traffic pattern is now in place along North Tryon Street between West 29th Street and Sylvania Avenue. This section of North Tryon Street is now one way northbound. Motorists traveling south on North Tryon Street are being diverted to a newly constructed, one-way street named North Church Street. Signs are in place to guide motorists through the area.

In order to accommodate median and storm drain construction in the project area, one lane on both North Tryon Street and North Church Street between West 29th Street and Sylvania Avenue will be closed until January 10, 2020. Motorists can avoid potential congestion by using North Graham Street as an alternate route. Local access to residences and businesses will be maintained.

Three CATS bus stops will move from North Tryon Street to North Church Street. Signs are in place to direct transit users to the new stops.

Motorists should use caution by allowing extra time when traveling through the project area, getting in the correct lane well in advance, doubling their following distance and paying close attention to pedestrians and vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes and from driveways and side streets.

Pedestrians should cross only at signalized intersections, using pedestrian walk signals where available and abide by any detour signage.

 Project updates

This project will make street improvements and support redevelopment along North Tryon Street from Dalton Avenue to 30th Street. Enhancements include safer pedestrian crossings through traffic-calming features, crosswalks, new sidewalk, planting strips, planted medians, landscaping, decorative lighting, reduced number of and/or size of driveway openings, bike lanes and utility relocations.

The project limits are along North Tryon Street from Dalton Avenue to 30th Street.

  • To provide opportunities for street tree planting while protecting and incorporating existing trees

  • To add decorative lighting on both sides of the street

  • To reduce driveway cuts for possible shared driveway options

  • To reduce the number and size of driveway openings

  • To provide appropriate accommodation for bicycle movement

The project team has engaged extensively with residents and businesses along the corridor, including participating in meetings hosted by NorthEnd Partners, a nonprofit advocate for communities and businesses in Charlotte's North End.
