The CityLYNX Gold Line is a 10-mile streetcar system that is an integral part of the 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan and is being constructed in phases. Phase 1 opened to revenue service in 2015; Phase 2 is currently under construction.
Phase 2 extends the current streetcar segment by a total of 2.5 miles. It will extend west by two miles, from the Charlotte Transportation Center to French Street in Charlotte's Historic West End. It will extend northeast by a half mile along Hawthorne Lane between Novant Presbyterian Hospital to Sunnyside Avenue, passing over I-74/Independence Boulevard. Phase 2 will include 11 additional stops and S70 Siemens modern streetcar vehicles with hybrid technology.
Various improvements have been made along the corridor in conjunction with the project, including the Frazier Avenue realignment project. This roadway realignment in Charlotte's Historic West End will align Frazier Avenue with Wesley Heights Way creating a four-way signalized intersection.
