This project will close North Church Street at the CSX Railroad. The crossing is being closed to improve safety for motorists and train crews by eliminating the potential for crashes. Also, the CSX Railroad is being lowered to go under the Norfolk Southern Railroad just west of the crossing, and the grade of the track will be lowered where Church Street currently crosses it.
Currently, the grade crossing is periodically blocked for yard switching activities. These blockages will increase over time as CSX expands its Pinoca Yard in northwest Charlotte resulting in an increase in intermodal train traffic. Many of these trains will be more than two miles long and would block the crossing for even longer periods. Improvements will be made to the street system to maintain adequate access to businesses along North Church Street near the road closure. The crossing closure is anticipated to occur by fall 2016.
