Eli B. Springs (1897-1899)
Prior to becoming Charlotte's Mayor, Springs served two terms as a Charlotte alderman.
Springs was involved in the cotton industry as a manufacturer.
During his Administration:
- In 1897, James B. Duke bought land along the Catawba River for a hydro-electric plant. His company, Southern Power Company helped bring more business to Charlotte.
- Presbyterian Hospital, begun by a group of Charlotte doctors, opened over a saloon at West Trade and South Mint streets. The hospital later became Presbyterian Healthcare System and the Belk Heart Center.
- Two companies of Charlotte soldiers left for Cuba to fight in the Spanish-American war.
