As crews progress along Tremont Avenue toward S. Tryon Street, rock blasting could occur. Residents and businesses will hear a warning signal (air horn) prior to the blast. There are typically two rock blasts per day; however, this may vary based on site conditions.

For the safety of crew members and the community, please pay attention to warning signals and any directions from the crew during blasting operations. Rock blasting is the safe removal of underground rock by using a series of controlled explosive charges placed underground. This standard construction procedure uses seismograph monitors to record all vibrations to ensure they are within site specifications. Heavy mats are used to cover each blast location to protect the surrounding area. Rock blasting along this area of the project is expected to take approximately 3 weeks.

During this time, motorists should follow all traffic signage. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses along the alignment. Please note, schedules are subject to change due to weather and other site conditions.

Charlotte Water and its contractors, BRS Inc., are making progress on important wastewater improvements in the area. Beginning this summer, the project consists of installing a new wastewater pipeline in the Brookhill and South End neighborhoods, totaling more than 15,000 linear feet of new pipe.

As part of this project, approximately 430 linear feet of stormwater culvert will be installed from Southside Park to under Toomey Avenue. To complete the project, Southside Park is closed and is expected to remain closed until June 2023.

Road closures:

  • Dunavant Street between S. Tryon Street and Distribution Street is expected to be closed from August 22 through October 22 to install new wastewater pipeline. Access for businesses and residents will be maintained and street parking will be available from Distribution Street to Hawkins Street.
  • Dunavant Street between Distribution Street and Hawkins Street is expected to be closed from October 24 through November 23. Access for businesses and residents will be maintained and street parking will be available from S. Tryon Street to Distribution Street.
  • Remus Road is expected to be closed starting in August 15 through the first week of September 2. Motorists can use Remount Road and Brookhill Road to detour around the work.
  • Brookhill Road between Remus Road and S. Tryon Street is expected to be closed September 5 through October 14. Motorists can use S. Tryon Street to Remount Road to Brookhill Road to detour around the work.

During this time, motorists should follow all detour signage. Charlotte Water understands that construction can be inconvenient, but this closure is necessary to ensure safety of all individuals. Please note, schedules are subject to change due to weather and other conditions.

In late March, Charlotte Water will be surveying and conducting fieldwork along the Irwin Creek tributary in the Brookhill and South End neighborhoods. In addition to personnel, customers could see minor clearing activities in the area, survey stakes/flags, paint markings on the ground, and machinery used for geotechnical borings. These borings involve drilling a hole roughly 4 inches in diameter, and upward of 30 feet deep, to determine the presence of rock in the area. In areas inaccessible for the drill rig, the refraction microtremor (ReMi) method or hand auger method will be used. Please see the March 2021 notification(PDF, 2MB) for additional information.

Charlotte Water is conducting preliminary engineering work along the Irwin Creek tributary in the Brookhill and South End neighborhoods for an important wastewater pipe replacement project that will expand the future capacity of the wastewater system in the area. In mid-November, subcontractors for Charlotte Water began surveying and conducting fieldwork including inspections and surveys of manholes and wastewater lines along the route, in the public rights-of-way. To inspect the condition of the pipe, crews conduct interior video surveillance, which includes running cameras from CCTV vehicles into the manholes. Crews will also perform smoke testing in the existing wastewater pipe to locate leaks in the sewers that allow rainwater, creek water, and other stormwater run-offs to enter the system. More information can be found in the surveying mailer located under Project Documents.
