Spring has sprung here in the Queen City! On this first day of spring, how are you celebrating the transition away from winter? 

We’ve got activities to help put you in the spring mood and reminders as you start your spring cleaning.

Community Cleanups

The 6th annual Charlotte-Mecklenburg Creek Week is in full swing. From March 16-23, there is a full slate of volunteer and educational events that will give you a deeper appreciation for our waterways.

Over the next few days, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, Keep Charlotte Beautiful, and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation are hosting a number of events that can help get you in the spring mood. Below is an overview of the multiple stream cleanups scheduled on March 23 for the Big Spring Clean.

  • 1631 Pleasant Plains Road, Matthews, NC 28105 (Squirrel Lake Park).
  • 8925 Townley Road, Huntersville, NC (McDowell Creek Greenway).
  • 2730 Randolph Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 (The Mint Museum). Register.

Yard Waste

Getting your yard in order can be a tall task, especially if you’ve been staying warm inside the last few months. It’s important to keep yard waste guidelines in mind as you’re working outside this spring season.

Yard waste is collected from the curb once a week on your scheduled collection day, provided that the materials meet preparation requirements, and made into mulch and compost for reuse. Residents must use paper yard waste bags or reusable containers weighing no more than 75 pounds when preparing leaves and grass clippings for yard waste collection. Limbs and branches will be collected loose as long as they are within the size requirements.

If you need to restock on paper bags, residents can pick some up at 1200 Otts St. Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., while supplies last.

Bulky Waste

Spring cleaning often leads to a pile of items you are looking to get rid of. Some can be donated, others can be cleared out in the regular trash, and a few might need to be scheduled for bulky item collection. 

Items such as household furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment and similar items too large to be placed in the garbage rollout cart and not eligible for recycling or yard waste collection are considered bulky waste and must be scheduled for collection. You can schedule bulky items by calling 311 or 704.336.7600; using the CLT+ app; or scheduling a bulky item collection online.
