Solid Waste Services Announces No Delay to Independence Day Collection

Published on July 01, 2024

Solid Waste Services trucks prepare to leave for the morning with the Charlotte skyline behind them.

City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services will collect garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste as scheduled on Thursday, July 4.

The city is closed, but there will be no delay to collection services. Be sure that carts are put at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on collection day.

If you are getting ready to grill out and set off fireworks for the holiday, remember to properly dispose of household hazardous waste. If placed in the regular garbage, hazardous waste can react and start fires in the back of collection trucks, putting residents and workers at risk.

As you enjoy your Fourth of July barbecue, please ensure you are using the guidelines below:

  • Charcoal should be fully cooled before placing in the garbage cart. Coals that aren’t fully cooled can cause fires.
  • Read disposal instructions on product labels to reduce the risk of products exploding, igniting, leaking, mixing with other chemicals or posing hazards on the way to the disposal facility.
  • Never mix leftover household hazardous waste with other products as they may ignite or explode.

Alternatively, household hazardous waste can be taken to one of Mecklenburg County’s full-service centers.

While school is out for the summer, it’s also important to keep a watchful eye on children playing outside as collection trucks go by. Make sure kids stay out of the way of trucks and remain safely on sidewalks or in driveways.

You can find your collection day by visiting the city’s new property tool, My Charlotte Lookup. Simply type in your address to be reminded of what day of the week you receive service and if you are an orange or green recycling week.

Solid Waste Services offers collection updates via text. Residents who would like to receive updates regarding impacts to their collection service can text their day of service to 73224. For example, if their collection day is Thursday, they would text “Thursday” to 73224.
