As Charlotte continues its rapid expansion, the need for advanced emergency response resources grows. Charlotte Fire is excited to announce the addition of three powerful new fire engines to its fleet, representing a significant investment in the safety and resilience of our city. These engines will be strategically housed at three Charlotte Firehouses, each positioned to provide swift and reliable protection to their surrounding communities. This addition marks another step in Charlotte Fire’s commitment to meeting the growing demands of a thriving metropolitan area.
With Charlotte’s neighborhoods evolving, new businesses and residential developments continue to spread across the city. Alongside this growth, there’s an increased demand for emergency services that can respond quickly and effectively to protect the lives and property of Charlotte’s residents. Fire Chief Reginald Johnson speaks passionately about the importance of enhancing the city’s firefighting and medical response capabilities. “Charlotte is experiencing incredible growth, and as our city expands, our commitment to safety only strengthens,” Chief Johnson stated. “These new engines are crucial investments, allowing us to be ready and equipped for any emergency, anywhere in Charlotte.”
Engine 24, a new powerhouse for Charlotte Fire, will be serving the south side of Charlotte, exemplifying the city’s commitment to public safety in this vibrant area.
The new engines will be stationed at three key locations to maximize their reach. Charlotte Firehouse 24 on Pineville-Matthews Road serves the bustling south side of the city, where both residential and commercial developments continue to increase. This area demands a robust response capability due to its high-density population and heavy traffic flow, ensuring that emergency response times remain efficient.
Engine 33, designed to handle any emergency, will serve the growing northern region of Charlotte, bringing advanced capabilities to the neighborhoods it protects.
On Charlotte’s expanding north side, Firehouse 33 on Mt Holly-Huntersville Road is set to protect a dynamic community. With neighborhoods, schools, and local businesses growing rapidly in the northern region, this station’s new engine will play an essential role in maintaining response readiness for an area experiencing considerable growth.
Engine 23, one of Charlotte Fire’s newest trucks, is ready to serve the eastern side of Charlotte, enhancing response capabilities in its community.
The third engine will be housed at Charlotte Firehouse 23 on East W.T. Harris Boulevard, covering the eastern parts of Charlotte. This diverse and densely populated area includes a mix of residential and commercial properties, requiring an engine equipped to handle a variety of emergency situations swiftly and effectively.
These new fire engines are not only symbols of Charlotte Fire’s commitment to city-wide safety but are also designed to meet the demands of modern firefighting and emergency response. Each engine is a state-of-the-art SMEAL model mounted on a Spartan MetroStar chassis, complete with a powerful Cummins L9 engine and an Allison Transmission, allowing for optimal performance and reliability as they traverse the city. With a WATEROUS 2-stage 2000 GPM pump, these engines can deliver a rapid and consistent flow of water, empowering Charlotte’s firefighters with the resources they need to tackle fires of all scales and complexities. Additionally, the 500-gallon water tank and 30-gallon foam tank on each engine ensure that firefighters have ample resources on board, allowing them to stay operational for extended periods without needing to refuel or resupply.
Beyond their capabilities in firefighting, these engines are vital to Charlotte Fire’s role as “first on scene” in critical medical emergencies. Charlotte Fire regularly responds to medical calls, where every second counts in providing life-saving aid. “These engines are more than just fire trucks; they are mobile response units that give our teams the tools to handle a variety of emergencies,” Chief Johnson explained. “From firefighting to critical medical calls, our firefighters are trained and ready to bring aid to those who need it, as quickly as possible.”

In keeping with the department’s commitment to environmental responsibility, each engine is equipped with an auxiliary power unit (APU) that reduces idling. This environmentally conscious feature helps conserve fuel and lowers maintenance costs, allowing Charlotte Fire to reduce its operational impact while extending the life of each vehicle. As the city grows, so does the responsibility to implement sustainable practices, and these engines embody that commitment.
This significant investment in Charlotte’s safety was made possible by the dedicated support of the City of Charlotte and its residents. The importance of community support is not lost on the department, as Chief Johnson expressed: “We are grateful to the people of Charlotte and our city leaders for prioritizing the safety and well-being of our community. Your support makes it possible for us to answer the call, day or night, with equipment that allows us to do our job safely and effectively.”
These new engines are already making an impact, improving Charlotte Fire’s capability to respond across the city. Each one brings a powerful presence to its designated area, ensuring that firefighters can reach incidents faster and with the right resources to make a difference. With the city’s population increasing, these engines represent an investment in the community’s future, symbolizing Charlotte Fire’s dedication to meeting the city’s evolving needs with state-of-the-art tools.
