Gabriel Howard, a 22-year-old firefighter with Charlotte Fire, knows what it means to serve. On Nov. 8, while his fellow recruit class members celebrated their graduation, Howard helped coordinate relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. His dedication to his state and community embodies the spirit of service that defines both his roles as a firefighter and a Sergeant with the North Carolina National Guard.
This morning at Charlotte Fire Headquarters, Howard received the recognition he had missed earlier this month. Standing before his new colleagues, he was “pinned” with his Charlotte Fire badge—a symbolic moment marking the start of his career with the department.
Captain Jason Cook pins Gabriel Howard with his Charlotte Fire badge in a heartfelt ceremony. The moment symbolizes Howard’s official entry into the fire department following his deployment.
For Howard, this moment was not just about personal accomplishment but also about honoring the many who have shaped his journey, particularly his grandfather.
A Foundation of Service
Howard joined the North Carolina National Guard at the age of 17, driven by a desire to serve while staying close to home to care for his grandfather. “He’s my dad,” Howard said with a smile. “He raised me from a young age. He’s older now, so I try to stay close and help him as much as I can.”
In the Guard, Howard works in vehicle maintenance, ensuring that everything from Humvees to supply trucks is ready for deployment. But when the state calls, Howard steps into a broader role. “During state active duty, you do whatever is needed—whether that’s water rescues, managing food pantries, or logistical support,” he explained.
During Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, Gabriel Howard worked tirelessly with the National Guard to support North Carolina communities. His role included logistical support, ensuring supplies and resources reached those in need.
When Hurricane Helene struck, Howard’s skills were critical. Tasked with managing fuel supplies and ensuring soldiers and equipment were prepared to deploy, he worked tirelessly in western North Carolina.
A Missed Milestone
Howard’s deployment meant missing a graduation he had worked six months to achieve. While his absence was bittersweet, he found solace in the camaraderie of his classmates and the ability to watch the ceremony via livestream. “It was tough, but I was glad my classmates could enjoy the moment,” he said.
Gabriel Howard takes the firefighter’s oath, pledging to serve the community with honor and integrity. This solemn moment at Charlotte Fire Headquarters marks the beginning of his new chapter as a firefighter.
Howard’s training officer, Captain Jason Cook, noted the significance of Howard’s dual service. “Gabriel’s commitment to both Charlotte Fire and the National Guard shows his character. He’s the kind of firefighter who puts others first, whether that’s in the station, on a fire scene, or in a disaster zone,” Cook said.
A Dream Realized
Howard’s path to Charlotte Fire was intentional. After two years as a firefighter in Hickory, he sought a department known for its excellence and opportunities. “I’ve always wanted to work with an organization with experienced firefighters and diverse opportunities. Charlotte Fire is one of the best,” he said.

Now stationed at Firehouse 43, a newly designated Special Operations station, Howard is eager to grow in his role. “I’m looking forward to learning more about Special Ops. It’s exciting to be part of a station where I can expand my skills and serve in new ways,” he said.
Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson expressed pride in welcoming Howard to the department. “Gabriel represents the best of what it means to be a firefighter—a servant’s heart, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to community. His journey, from caring for his dad to serving in the Guard and now joining Charlotte Fire, is a testament to the values we hold dear,” Johnson said.

Looking Ahead
For Gabriel Howard, the call to service has always been deeply personal. Balancing roles in the National Guard and as a firefighter is no small feat, but Howard sees them as complementary. “Both roles are about helping people, whether it’s in a disaster zone or responding to emergencies here in Charlotte. It’s all about being there when someone needs you,” he said.
Firehouse 43 is an ideal fit for Howard’s aspirations. As a Special Operations station, it provides opportunities to engage in advanced training and tackle challenging emergencies. “This station is a great place to learn. I’m excited about what’s ahead,” he said.

Howard’s story also reflects the importance of teamwork. “My classmates, my National Guard colleagues, and now my Charlotte Fire crew—each group has shaped me. I’m grateful for their support and for the chance to give back alongside them,” he said.
With a bright future ahead, Howard is ready to make an impact, one call at a time.
