Charlotte Joy Rides: Sunsetting December 31, 2024

October 28, 2024 - The Shared Mobility Program, which launched in 2012 as a station-based, docked bike share system, has played a pivotal role in advancing Charlotte's transportation goals. The program, encompassing both bike share and e-scooter initiatives, is key in promoting a sustainable and convenient mode of transportation across the city.
As the bike share system operator, Charlotte Joy Rides has been a key service of the Shared Mobility Program, offering accessible transportation options within and around Uptown and South End. Through a successful partnership with Charlotte Center City Partners (CCCP) Community Trust, the station-based, docked bike share system provided vital links for residents and visitors to parks, greenways, transit hubs, and other key destinations—helping to foster a vibrant culture of cycling and shared mobility within the city.
"We are thankful for Charlotte Center City Partners and Charlotte Joy Rides for their partnership and management of North Carolina’s first bike share system.,” said Debbie Smith, Director of the Charlotte Department of Transportation. “Their efforts have been instrumental in the success of our Shared Mobility Program, increasing transportation options for our residents and visitors. Together, we have made strides towards a more sustainable future for the City of Charlotte."
Looking forward, the City of Charlotte is reimagining the future of the Shared Mobility Program. Combined with a growing system of parking corrals integrated into the city’s curb lane management strategy, Charlotte is thrilled to announce the deployment of dockless electric bikes in partnership with existing e-scooter operators, Lime and Bird. This evolution aims to enhance safe and equitable mobility options and strengthen first/last mile connections to transit, ensuring that innovative transportation solutions continue to meet the evolving needs of the community.
We are excited to continue our commitment to providing dynamic transportation options that support the growth and development of Charlotte.
