Gerard Singleton a new recruit for Charlotte Fire, has always harbored a dream of becoming a firefighter. "I always wanted to be a firefighter, I guess since I was a little kid," Singleton said. His journey, however, was marked by significant events that shaped his path and reinforced his determination.

As a child, Singleton's aspirations were momentarily halted by the tragic incident known as the Charleston 9, where nine firefighters lost their lives battling a blaze in Charleston, South Carolina. The gravity of this event left a deep impression on Singleton and his family. "A big tragedy happened in Charleston. Of course, the Charleston 9," he recalled. "So my parents kind of put that on hold, told me to go to school, get an education."

A tribute to the Charleston 9, the firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2007. This tragic event deeply impacted Singleton's decision to pursue firefighting.

Singleton followed his parents' advice and pursued higher education, earning a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Prince Marion University. Despite his academic success and a knack for science, his passion for firefighting never waned. "I had this knack for chemicals and biology stuff, just science in general always had an interest for me. But, you know, firefighting was still number one on my list," Singleton explained. He discovered that his scientific background could be an asset in his firefighting career, creating a "win-win situation" for him.

Singleton's initial foray into firefighting began with the North Charleston Fire Department, where he gained invaluable experience. "North Charleston Fire Department was great. A lot of hands-on learning, very busy department, very diverse community," he shared. The variety of incidents he encountered, from residential fires to airport emergencies, provided a solid foundation for his skills.

Gerard Singleton, alongside his fellow recruits, pays close attention to instructions, exemplifying the discipline and focus required to be a firefighter.

However, when the opportunity to join Charlotte Fire arose, Singleton knew he had to seize it. "Charlotte is like the bigger version of North Charleston, much bigger. It's like stepping up to the big leagues," he said. The increased call volume and the challenges of a larger city presented new opportunities for growth and learning. "So far, it's been amazing. I learned so much , they put so much more stuff in my tool bag that I learned here."

Singleton's journey through recruit school was not without its hardships. Just a month into the program, he faced the devastating loss of his father. "I lost my father at the beginning of recruit school. I wish he was going to be here to see my graduation one day," he shared, his voice tinged with emotion. Despite the heartache, Singleton found solace and support in his classmates. "My classmates, they came and supported me. They actually came to my father's funeral. It was great to have them with me, a very loving experience."

Singleton and his fellow recruits prepare for a rigorous training session, exemplifying teamwork and resilience during their firefighter training.

The camaraderie and support from his fellow recruits played a crucial role in helping Singleton navigate this difficult period. "The whole experience has been great with my classmates. We got a whole bunch of guys from all over the country, but we all came together. It's very humbling, but also very rewarding," he reflected. As he continues his training and prepares for a future of service, Singleton remains driven by the memory of his father and the support of his peers. "I know that he's looking down on me, watching me pursue my dream and my passion," he said.
