On April 29, 2024, a tragic day unfolded in the City of Charlotte, one that will forever be remembered for both the devastating loss of life and the unparalleled courage displayed by first responders. Charlotte Fire honors the brave individuals who demonstrated personal courage and extraordinary bravery under life-threatening circumstances with the Charlotte Fire Award for Bravery. 

The Award for Bravery is presented to members who exhibit personal courage and bravery under extraordinary circumstances, often putting their own safety at risk in an effort to protect or rescue another life. During the incident on April 29th, these firefighters and officers embodied this ethos, stepping forward in the face of imminent danger. 

Recipients of the Charlotte Fire Award for Bravery:

These individuals responded with extraordinary bravery to the harrowing events of that day. Working alongside law enforcement under heavy fire, they risked their lives and exemplified what it means to be a Charlotte firefighter. Their actions helped mitigate one of the darkest moments for law enforcement in the city's history. 

Each recipient showed the utmost dedication and resilience, responding with precision and selflessness in the face of overwhelming danger. This award is a testament to their unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of their fellow citizens and first responders. 

Charlotte Fire is proud to recognize and celebrate the bravery of these exceptional members, whose courage continues to set the highest standard of service and sacrifice. 

Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson expressed his deep appreciation for the award recipients, stating, "The actions of these firefighters on that fateful day remind us of the true meaning of bravery and selflessness. They stood in harm’s way to protect others, showcasing the very best of what it means to serve this city. Their courage, determination, and heroism will forever be a source of pride for Charlotte Fire and our community."
