Westover Division - Homicide in the 300 block of Fairwood Avenue

Case Update: Tuesday, September 11, 2018,

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department homicide detectives have charged Daquan Thompson, DOB: 01/03/1998, for the murder of Decario Bethea.

During the course of their investigation homicide detectives developed Thompson as a suspect in this case.  On 9/11/2018 Daquan Thompson was already in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail for an unrelated charge when homicide detectives transported him to the Law Enforcement Center to be interviewed.  At the conclusion of the interview the detectives obtained an arrest warrant on Thompson for the murder of Mr. Bethea.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

Friday, August 31, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 300 block of Fairwood Avenue in the Westover Division.  The call for service came in at 4:10 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018. 

Westover Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male with an apparent gunshot wound.  Medic transported the victim, a 24 year old male,  to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased approximately 2 hours later.  The victim has been identified as Decario Bethea, DOB: 09/28/1993.

The initial investigation has revealed that the victim was outside in the Southside Apartments when he became involved in verbal altercation with 2 individuals.  During this argument the suspect shot the victim.   It appears that the victim knew the suspect.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.   Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident.
