On Thursday, May 31, 2018 at approximately 6:15 p.m., Steele Creek Division Officers responded to the 11000 block of South Tryon Street near the intersection Moss Road in reference to an injury crash. The crash involved a pedestrian and an on duty officer in a marked patrol vehicle.  Upon arrival, officers located a 2013 Chevrolet Caprice that had struck a pedestrian in the roadway.  MEDIC arrived and transported the pedestrian, identified as Arnulfo Salazar to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.  The Officer, identified as Jeffrey Page was not injured.

The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit and the DWI Task Force responded to conduct an investigation. The preliminary investigation determined Officer Jeffrey Page was traveling south west on South Tryon Street in a marked patrol vehicle when the pedestrian ran from the center median north across South Tryon Street and into the path of the 2013 Chevrolet Caprice.  After impact, Officer Page stopped immediately and began rendering aid until MEDIC arrived.  The pedestrian was not within a marked cross walk and was not wearing reflective clothing.  At the time of the vehicle crash, witnesses advised it was raining and traffic near the crash scene was light.

Next of Kin arrived on scene and was notified.

Speed and alcohol are not contributing factors for Officer Page. Detectives are working to determine if impairment was a contributing factor for the pedestrian.

Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call Detective Reibold (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
