Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 4400 block of E. Independence Blvd. in the Providence Division.  The call for service came in at 4:33 a.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018.

Providence Division officers responded to a report of a Commercial Breaking and Entering at the American Beauty and Garden Center located at 4400 E. Independence Blvd which was first called in by an alarm company.  Around the same time an individual called 911 advising that he was responding to the alarm and that he had observed a suspect inside the business by watching a security camera.  This same individual then called back a few minutes later and told the 911 operator that he had just shot someone at that location.

Upon their arrival, officers located both the male victim behind the business who had been shot as well as the owner of the business who had shot him.  This individual was pronounced deceased at the scene by MEDIC.   The victim's identity will be released pending family notification.

Detectives with the Homicide Unit responded to the scene.  Crime Scene Search has responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, K9 Unit, and Operations Command responded to the scene.

Based upon the initial investigation, it appears that the male victim broke into the American Beauty Garden Center by smashing the front glass door.  When the owner of the business arrived at the scene the individual who had broken into the business ran out of the front door and was shot by the owner at that time.   The victim then ran behind the business which is where he was located when the officers arrived.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.  Detective Isenhour is the lead detective assigned to the case.  The public can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit the Crime Stoppers website at http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
