***UPDATE*** Independence Division - Three suspects charged in common law robbery on Independence Blvd

Case Update: Tuesday, May 15, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Independence Division have charged Deeshun Dade, DOB: 12/26/2001, for his involvement in these additional cases.

Additional information and evidence gathered during the course of the investigation led detectives in confirming Dade's involvement in several other cases.  Fourteen warrants for his arrest were obtained by detectives.  On May 14, 2018, Dade was served the warrants while still in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.  Dade was charged with three counts of Felony Possession of Stolen Goods, two counts of Larceny of Motor Vehicle, two counts of Hit and Run, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Common Law Robbery, Assault by Pointing a Gun, Assault with Deadly Weapon, Fail to Heed Emergency Lights/Sirens, No Operators License, and Operate a Motor Vehicle While Fleeing/Elude Law Enforcement.

  • 20180427-1536-03 Armed Robbery (6600 block of Slatewood Road)
  • 20180430-1847-02 B/E Motor Vehicle (6000 block of Florence Avenue)
  • 20180430-2050-02 Common Law Robbery (8800 block of E. WT Harris Boulevard)
  • 20180506-2230-01 Armed Robbery/ADW (2600 block of Dion Avenue)

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Independence Divisions have charged William Mitchell, DOB: 12/30/2001, Durell Smith, DOB: 12/12/2001, and Deeshun Dade. DOB: 12/26/2001, for their involvement in these cases.

On Monday, May 7, 2018, at 8:51 p.m., Independence Division Officers responded to the 6000 block of Independence Boulevard in reference to a robbery from person call for service.  The victim stated that he and the known suspects went to the location when the suspects began to assault him.  During the assault, the suspects took the victim's cell phone.  Detectives identified the two suspects as William Mitchell and Deeshun Dade and obtained warrants for their arrest. On May 8, 2018, officers located and arrested Mitchell without incident and transported him to the Independence Division team office.  During the investigation, it was determined that a third suspect had recorded the incident on a cell phone.  The third suspect was identified as Durell Smith.  Smith was arrested shortly thereafter and transported to the team office where he was interviewed.

Later that day, officers from the Independence Division, K9 Unit, and the Aviation Unit located and arrested Dade without incident.  Detectives also identified Dade as the suspect in a larceny of motor vehicle case that occurred on April 30, 2018, in the 6000 block of Florence Avenue.  (CMPD report 2018-0430-184702)

At the conclusion of the interviews, Dade was charged with Common Law Robbery, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and Misdemeanor Larceny.  Mitchell was charged with Common Law Robbery and Felony Conspiracy.  Smith was charged with Felony Conspiracy.  The suspects were subsequently transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives are reviewing similar cases and additional charges may be filed.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
