***UPDATE*** Freedom Division - Homicide on Rhyne Station Road

Case Update: Tuesday, April 10, 2018,

Jaime Joel Melendez Suarez has been arrested for the murder of Jacob Hernandez.  Earlier today members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) located Melendez Suarez and served the outstanding murder warrant for his arrest.  He has been transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

Friday, April 6, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the Freedom Division. 

On April 6, 2018, the body of Jacob Hernandez, DOB: 01/08/1998 was located in the 100 block of Rhyne Station Road. Mr. Hernandez had been reported missing by his family on April 5, 2018.  Based on information gathered during the initial missing person investigation, detectives suspected foul play in the disappearance of Mr. Hernandez. 

Detectives identified Jaime Joel Melendez Suarez,  DOB: 04/15/1999 as a suspect.  Earlier today, they obtained a warrant charging Melendez Suarez with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury.  Detectives with the Violent Crimes Apprehension Team have been working to locate Melendez Suarez, but he remains at large. 

This evening, the CMPD Homicide Unit, Civil Emergency Unit and Crime Scene Investigation Unit, including "Morty," a human remains detection canine were deployed to search a wooded area off Rhyne Station Road, where they located the body of Mr. Hernandez.  Initial information indicates that Hernandez was shot in the 4200 block of South Boulevard and transported by the suspect to the location where he was found.  At this time, the charges on Mr. Melendez Suarez have been upgraded to Murder. 

Crime Scene Search responded, processed the scene, and collected physical evidence. CMPD Crime Analysis, CMPD Aviation, CMPD Civil Emergency Unit, and FBI Charlotte Field office also assisted in the investigation.
