The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is conducting a traffic fatality investigation that occurred in the 10500 block of Mount Holly Road. On Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at approximately 3:36 p.m., Freedom Division officers responded to a report of a single vehicle crash located on Mount Holly Road near the intersection of Chattaroy Drive. Upon their arrival they located the vehicle which had driven off the roadway into a creek. MEDIC and CFD arrived on scene, and MEDIC pronounced the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Benjamin Max Jones, deceased at 3:42 p.m.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to conduct the investigation. Their initial investigation has revealed that Mr. Jones was operating a silver 2002 Nissan Altima while traveling northwest in the 10500 block of Mount Holly Road. Mr. Jones drove off the roadway to the right and struck the concrete guard rail. His vehicle overturned and went down a 20 foot embankment, landing on its side in a creek. Mr. Jones was not secured with a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.
Prior to the crash witnesses observed the Altima traveling on Mount Holly Road from Interstate 485 towards Mt Holly-Huntersville Road in a normal manner until the vehicle went off the roadway to the right. Witnesses attempted to render aid on scene prior to first responders arriving.
Neither speed or alcohol appear to be contributing factors for this vehicle crash.
