***UPDATE*** Eastway Division - Detectives conducting a homicide investigation

Case Update:  Monday, April 23, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged a third suspect, a 15-year-old-male juvenile, with the murder of Eskinder Asefaw.

During the investigation, Homicide Detectives identified the juvenile as a suspect in this case and obtained a secure custody order for his arrest.  Earlier this morning, the juvenile was located and arrested by the School Resource Officers at Garinger High School.  During the arrest, the juvenile was in possession of a handgun and stolen vehicle.  The juvenile was subsequently transported to police headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. 

At the conclusion of the interview, the juvenile was transported to a juvenile detention facility and charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.  His name is not being released due to his age. 

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

Case Update:  Monday, April 23, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Tavone Tyrik Smith, DOB: 02/10/2001 and a 15-year-old male juvenile for their involvement in this case.

Information and evidence gathered during the course of the homicide investigation led Homicide Detectives in identifying Smith and the 15-year-old suspect.  Homicide Detectives located Smith and the juvenile suspect at a local residence and subsequently transported them to police headquarters, where they were interviewed by detectives.  At the conclusion of the interviews, Smith was charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and was transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department.  Detectives obtained a secure custody order against the juvenile and transported him to a juvenile detention facility.  The juvenile was charged with Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, and Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.  His name is not being released due to his age.

Case Update: Saturday, April 21, 2018,

Earlier this morning, the victim who has been identified as Eskinder Dawit Asefaw, DOB: 08/21/1991, was pronounced deceased at Carolinas Medical Center from the injuries he sustained during the shooting.  His family has been notified of his death.

Friday, April 20, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a shooting investigation that occurred in the 1500 block of Wembley Drive in the Eastway Division.  The call for service came in at 4:48 p.m., on Friday, April 20, 2018.

Eastway Division patrol officers responded to an accident call for service in the 1500 block of Wembley Drive.  Upon arrival officers located a subject with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries.  Officers determined a motor accident did not occur when they arrived on scene. 

Detectives with the Homicide Unit are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any witnesses to this incident.  The investigation is in its early stages.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
