Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are currently investigating thefts that involve known groups of individuals that are targeting victims who leave their purses while shopping by using a distraction method to gain the victims attention while their accomplice steal their credit cards.  The suspects then use the stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards from various retail stores which they sell online or through social media.  Detectives have seen an increase in these types of thefts which are occurring at retail stores and restaurants and are currently working with various agencies throughout the country regarding these active and ongoing investigations.  Detectives would like to remind the public to always be aware of your surroundings and to report any suspicious activity and call 911. 

 

Safety Tips:

Practicing the following personal safety tips as you go about your daily activities while shopping to make you less attractive to would be criminals. 

  • BE ALERT!!  Know who is near you and what activities going on around you.
  • Walk with authority, look ahead and scan your surroundings.
  • Hold your purse/handbag close to your body to prevent someone from stealing the contents.
