CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Dec. 12, 2016) – The City Clerk’s Office is now accepting applications for an anticipated vacancy on the Charlotte City Council. Democrat John Autry, who represents District 5, was elected to the N.C. House of Representatives.
Applications for the District 5 Council vacancy will be accepted beginning Monday, Dec. 12, through Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. All interested applicants must submit an application to the City Clerk's Office. Applications will be available on the city's website, by email, fax or hard copy.
District 5 is located in the eastern part of Charlotte, including areas near portions of North Sharon Amity, Albemarle Road, Rama Road and Idlewild Road.
State statutes provide that the vacancy be filled by City Council appointment. In cities, including Charlotte, whose elections are conducted on a partisan basis, the person appointed shall be a member of the same political party as the person being replaced. Other qualifications as provided by statute are that the appointed successor be a registered voter, be 20 years of age or older and be a resident of and registered to vote in District 5.
In order to qualify for consideration, applicants for the District 5 vacancy must:
- Be a registered Democrat;
- Be a registered voter;
- Be 20 years of age or older; and
- Be a resident of and registered to vote in District 5.
A public forum for qualified applicants will be held during the Jan. 9, 2017, City Council business meeting.
