***UPDATE*** Central Division - Detectives conducting a shooting investigation on West First Street

Case Update:  Saturday, June 23, 2018,

During the investigation, Homicide Detectives identified and interviewed the shooter in this case and determined that Wayne Carrothers was armed while breaking into a residence on Greenleaf Avenue when he was shot by the homeowner.  As a result of this information, detectives obtained a Felony Breaking and Entering warrant on Carrothers. 

Early this morning, Carrothers was pronounced deceased at Carolinas Medical Center after succumbing to the injuries that he sustained during the shooting that occurred on June 15, 2018.  His family has been notified of his death. 

At this point in the investigation, the shooter has not been charged with any crimes so his name is not being released.  The case will be presented to the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's office who will determine if this individual will be prosecuted.  

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

The victim in this case has been identified as Wayne Carrothers, DOB: 11/17/1980.  His family has been notified.  He remains in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center.

Friday, June 15, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a shooting investigation that occurred in the 1100 block of W. 1st Street in the Central Division.  The call for service came in at 4:17 p.m., on Friday, June 15, 2018.

Central Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service in the 1100 block of 1st Street.  Upon arrival officers located a subject with apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. 

A male subject of interest was located on scene by responding officers and has been transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by Homicide Detectives.  Homicide detectives are currently speaking with witnesses and are not searching for any additional suspects.  

The investigation is in its early stages.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Real Time Crime Center, and Operations Command responded to the scene.
