CMPD Detectives arrest arson suspect

Thursday, October 11, 2018,

On Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at approximately 10:59p.m., the Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) responded to the 6300 block of South Boulevard in reference to a fire at Payal Indian Grocery and Spices.  Upon arrival members with CFD conducted fire suppression operations, ultimately extinguishing the fire. 

A CFD Fire Investigator and an ATF Special Agent collaborated in a fire origin and cause investigation and determined the fire was incendiary in nature.  The Union County Fire Marshal also responded to the scene to assist by using an Accelerant Detection Canine to process the scene.  A CMPD Arson Detective responded to the scene and interviewed the suspect.

After evaluating evidence and interviewing a witness, Devendrak Patel, DOB: 11/05/1957 was identified as a suspect and arrested.  The custody of the suspect has been transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sherriff's Office and he has been charged with burning of a building of trade.
