Road closure information is separated by neighborhood including Hawthorne Lane (Elizabeth), West End and Uptown.
Hawthorne Lane Bridge Closure
July 24, 2017 to March 31, 2019
Hawthorne Lane, between Bay Street and Hawthorne Bridge Court, will close on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 9 a.m. until approximately Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 6 p.m. This closure is necessary for preparation work, bridge demolition and bridge reconstruction as part of CityLYNX Gold Line Phase 2 construction.
Additionally, Northbound Hawthorne Lane between East 7th Street and Bay Street, will close during this same timeframe to accomodate the bridge closure.
Motorists should utilize East 7th Street and Central Avenue as the detour. This road will be closed to all through traffic.

***Hawthorne Lane, between Park Drive and East 7th Street, will remain closed through the end of 2017 due to emergency storm water work.
Hawthorne Bridge Girder Removal
Wednesday, December 13 – Saturday, December 16
11 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly
- Full closure of westbound Independence Boulevard
- Detour: Motorists can detour using Eastway Drive, Central Avenue, North Kings Drive and East 4th Street.
Sunday, December 17 – Thursday, December 21
11 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly
- Full closure of eastbound Independence Boulevard
- Detour: Motorists on John Belk Freeway can detour using Charlottetowne Avenue, East 7th Street, Washburn Avenue and Television Place/Briar Creek Road. Motorists on Brookshire Freeway can detour using East 4th Street, McDowell Street, East 7th Street, Washburn Avenue and Television Place/Briar Creek Road.
For each nightly closure, crews will begin preparatory work at 8 p.m. Full work will not begin until 11 p.m. when Independence Boulevard closes.
Girder removal is a significant part of the bridge demolition process. We appreciate your patience during this critical phase of the project. The Gold Line project management team is continuing to work with NCDOT and other partners to minimize impact to both residents and motorists through this process.
W. Trade Street Single-lane Closure from Tryon Street to Church Street
November 13, 2017 to January 12, 2018
West Trade Street, between Tryon Street and Church Street , will experience a single-lane closure from Monday, November 13, 2017 at 9 a.m. and will re-open on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 6p.m. This closure is necessary for construction at Charlotte Marriott City Center.
West Trade Street Lane Closures (multiple)
August 23 - February 2, 2018
West Trade Street, between Wesley Heights Way and Sycamore Street, will be reduced to one lane in each direction on Wednesday, August 23, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. until Friday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m.
This work is related to CityLYNX Gold Line Phase 2 project.
Whitehaven Avenue, State Street Closure
November 27 - December 25
Whitehaven Avenue, between State Street and South Bruns Avenue, will close on Monday, November 27 at 9 a.m. until Monday, December 25 at 6 a.m.
State Street, starting at Whitehaven Avenue up to the dead end, will close on Monday, December 11 and will re-open on Monday, December 25 at 6:00 AM.
This closure is necessary for sewer utility work. Motorists and pedestrians should utilize Rozzelles Ferry Road, West Trade Street, South Bruns Avenue and Sumter Ave.
Northbound I-77 Off-ramp (Exit 10) onto Trade St. Closure
December 15 – 18
Northbound I-77 Off-Ramp onto Trade Street (Exit 10) will close on Friday, December 15 11:00 p.m. and will re-open on Sunday, December 17 6:00 a.m. The area will close again on Sunday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. and will re-open on Monday, December 18 at 5:00 a.m. This closure is necessary for storm drainage installation.
Detour: Proceed North to Exit 11 A (I-277 / NC Hwy. 16), Take Exit 4 (Graham St.), Take a right on 10th St., Take a left on Graham St., Proceed toward Trade St., End detour at Trade St.
Weather and unforeseen circumstances occasionally prevent work from being completed as scheduled, and make it unsafe to reopen lanes or streets when planned. When this occurs, City traffic engineers work directly with other City staff and contractors to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and reduce impacts to the traveling public.
Pedestrians walking near work zone areas should be alert, cautious and allow extra traveling time. It is advised they cross at signalized intersections, use pedestrian walk signals where available and abide by detour signage.
Motorists traveling through work zone areas should be alert and extra cautious. Drivers should get in the correct lane well in advance and constantly be on the lookout for vehicles merging into adjacent travel lanes as they approach a work zone. Drivers should double their following distance.
