Charlotte Gateway Station: The Project

The Charlotte Gateway Station Project is a partnership between the City of Charlotte and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The project may be constructed in multiple phases based on availability of funding.


 

Phase 1: TS&S/ Design and engineering

  • Completion of preliminary engineering and environmental analysis

  • Acquisition of remaining property needed and preliminary site work

  • Design and construction of track, structures and signals (TS&S) infrastructure

  • Completion of a station area plan.

  • Estimated cost - Approximately $63 - $65 million, comprised of federal, state and local funds


 

Phase 2: Completion of interim station

  • Completion of interim station, platform, canopy and related infrastructure (parking, stairs, elevators, etc.)

  • Estimated cost - Approximately $20.5 million


 

Phase 3: Procurement of P3 Partner, followed by design & construction of a permanent station

  • Design and construction of permanent station will be completed with P3 Partner

  • The permanent station will anchor a mixed-use development complementing existing attractions and destinations in Uptown.  The station will include transportation modes such as Greyhound and CATS bus improvements, rail passenger ticketing and modern customer amenities.​

What's Next?

 

Station Area Planning Process

In May 2016, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the City of Charlotte selected a consultant team to lead the station area planning process. 

Tasks to be completed within the station area plan process include a transportation analysis; public outreach to stakeholders, residents and businesses; development of a conceptual design of the station and the station area, and development of a preliminary financial plan.  It is anticipated that the station area planning process will be completed by fall 2016. 


 

Phase 1 – Track, Structures & Signals (TS&S)/ Design and engineering

In spring 2016, consultants were also selected for civil and structural design of the new bridges and tracks and to provide architectural design and services.
