Laboratory Services

Environmental Laboratory Services is a full service environmental laboratory operating from a 45,000 square-foot LEED Gold certified facility.  In addition to supporting Charlotte Water's analytical needs, we are also certified to provide commercial analytical services for drinking water, wastewater, industrial discharges, ground, surface and storm waters.  More than 250,000 analyses for organic and inorganic chemical components and microbiological organisms are performed annually by our highly trained staff with combined experience of over 480 years.

General Chemistry and Auto-Chemistry Sections offer analyses for a variety of nutrients, ions and traditional bench-top chemistries including:

  • Flow-injection analyzers: Cyanide, Nitrogen and Phosphorus
  • Ion chromatography: Chloride, Fluoride, Nitrate, Nitrite, Sulfate
  • Manual and automated titrations
  • Colorimetric determinations
  • Gravimetric methodology
  • Fluorescence detection: Chlorophyll a 

Metals Section offers rapid, simultaneous analysis of up to 26 different metallic analytes in a wide variety of water matrices to provide optimal detection limits by using:

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES)
  • Flame and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (AA/GFAA)
  • Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption (CVAA)

Organics Section performs analyses for more than 300 organic compounds including hexane extractable materials (HEM), volatile, semi-volatile, pesticides, PCBs and other organic constituents using:

  • Three Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) systems coupled with Purge and Trap systems
  • Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD)
  • Gas Chromatography-Micro Electron Capture Detector (GC-µECD)
  • Liquid-Liquid and Solid Phase Extractions
  • Gel Permeation Chromatography

Microbiology Section utilizes the most up-to-date bacteriological methodologies to rapidly determine:

  • Total and fecal coliforms
  • E. coli
  • Enterococci
  • Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC)
  • Class B Biosolids fecal coliform
  • Cryptosporidium and Giardia (LT2 certified)
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR/qPCR)

Additional Activities
Environmental Laboratory Services is involved in method development, research projects and scientific partnerships with universities and governmental agencies.We also provide mutual aid in the form of analytical and consultative services through NC Emergency Management Disaster Preparedness Region & and through the US EPA’s Emergency Response Laboratory Network/Water Laboratory Alliance (ERLN/WLA).  Our in-house instrumentation in organics, metals and microbiology allow us to screen for more than 20,000 chemical components and seven pathogens.
