Stream restoration and water quality improvements
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services restored
more than two miles of McDowell Creek in northwestern Mecklenburg
County. Years of fast-paced growth had damaged the stream channel and
affected water quality due to less open space to absorb excess rainfall.
The increased amount of fast-moving water had eroded the stream banks.
During restoration, damage to the stream was repaired, future erosion
will be reduced and the stream will be adapted to the increasingly urban
Repair erosion damage to the stream bed and banks
- Stabilize stream channel to reduce future erosion
- Reduce the amount of sediment (dirt particles) in the water
- Limit future deposits of silt that can block the stream channel and clog culverts
- Improve water
- Enhance aquatic life and wildlife
