Solid Waste Fee Frequently Asked Questions

It's property tax time, and you may be wondering why you were assessed an annual solid waste fee on your property tax bill. All residences in the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are assessed a solid waste fee to offset the cost of waste collection and disposal and waste reduction services and facilities. The fee breakdown is as follows:

  • Single-family Charlotte Residence: $39 paid to the City of Charlotte and $24 paid to Mecklenburg County.
  • Multi-family Charlotte Residence (per unit): $39 paid to the City of Charlotte and $24 paid to Mecklenburg County.

Tax rate and fee decisions are made by elected officials -- the Charlotte City Council and the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners
