 Project updates

​​This project is part of the City's Intersection Capacity and Multimodal Enhancement Program, whose general purpose is to identify improvements at the Idlewild/Rama/Monroe intersection to enhance conditions for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and motorists. 
  • ​To increase intersection capacity and level of service while improving travel conditions for all modes of transportation

  • To connect surrounding neighborhoods with existing and future neighborhood services

  • To support private economic development at this Independence corridor node

Community engagement activities will occur throughout the project's duration to keep those interested in the project informed and provide opportunities for the public to share ide​as, opinions and concerns. Below are the public meetings held to date:
October 25, 2017 - The project team attended the Monroe Road Advocates (MoRA) Government 101 Workshop and presented the project in an open-house format and also shared an update in a short presentation​. 

October 4, 2017 - Project team members attended Taste of the World at the Charlotte Museum of History and showcased several Community Investment Plan projects on the east side, including this project.

March 8, 2017 - ​The project team hosted a public meeting at the Independence Regional Library to share the project plan and preliminary design concepts.

December 20, 2016 - January 31, 2017 - ​The public was given an opportunity to participate in an online public meeting​ to learn about the project and provide feedback.

Project funding will come from a combination of proposed public improvement bonds and state funding.

​​​​​The Community Investment Plan approved by City Council in 2013 calls for voters to consider approval of funding for a number of infrastructure programs. Voters approved bond financing in 2014 and will vote on further bond financing in 2016, 2018 and 2020. For this project, if voters approve funding, City staff engages the community to determine the details of what will ultimately be built. Once these details are known, the cost of the project is estimated and published. Learn more about the Community Investment Plan at​
