Increased economic mobility is a priority for the City of Charlotte and a mandate for the Economic Development division. Not only are business-driven training and preparation for connectivity to high growth careers necessary to decrease wealth gaps in the City, they are essential to upgrade the quality of life and strengthen communities. Therefore, our division, through the implementation of programs, partnerships, and policies, will focus on connecting businesses and Charlotte job seekers, particularly those with multiple barriers to employment.
Partnership for Inclusive Employment and Career Excellence
The City of Charlotte's Economic Development division is partnering with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont and the Urban League of Central Carolinas to sponsor a workforce development program that provides skills and training as well as supportive services to help people obtain and keep a job.
The Project P.I.E.C.E. (Partners for Inclusive Employment and Career Excellence) Workforce Development Program focuses on addressing identified labor market shortages in key industries and increasing employment opportunities among individuals with multiple barriers to employment. Participants will have access to state-of-the-art career centers and services such as mentoring, coaching and intensive case management.
The program will initially serve 180 participants with career-related training in the following industries:
- Fiber Optics/Broadband and Premise Cabling
- Residential and Commercial Construction
- Highway Construction and Trades
Program objectives are for individuals to complete training and be placed into training-related career paths including full-time employment, pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships. A unique aspect of the initiative is the inclusion of corporate advisory councils for each training area that will advise on curriculum, build rapport with participants and be potential employers.
